The present work (1) shows the importance of the single-particle approximation (trajectories in a reference field) in forming the basis of an understanding of the quiet-time penetration of cosmic rays into the magnetosphere, (2) considers 'steady dynamics' such as wave-particle interaction and field line reconnection, which is believed to exist nearly all the time, and (3) reviews the work which has been done in the more complex and less understood field of 'impulsive dynamics' such as geomagnetic storms and substorms. At present, the interpretation of energetic particle measurements yields results consistent with other types of measurements.
