A Time Projection Chamber is the primary option for the main tracker of the detector at a future e+e- linear collider. The design issues for developing a high performance TPC are discussed with particular emphasis on the R&D for a new type of gas amplification system, based on GEM structures. Measurements and numerical simulations on the charge transfer in Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM) are presented. The charge transfer parameters are derived from the electrical currents monitored in a triple GEM test chamber during the irradiation with an 55Fe source. These measurements are performed in magnetic fields up to 5 T and compared with numerical calculations using the programs MAXWELL and GARFIELD. In addition individual events are recorded with a segmented pad structure for cluster width analysis.
