The approach of the solar wind plasma to the magnetopause is analyzed considering the particle motion only in the equatorial plane. The assumed radial-symmetric structure of the earth's dipole-residue field, reaching beyond the magnetopause, causes a deflection of the charged particles in the solar wind plasma. The generated space charges are the cause of an electric field perpendicular to the streaming solar wind. Plasma oscillations in the range of 'hybrid frequencies' are numerically determined. Adequate observations and measurements in the undisturbed solar wind and in the magnetosheath confirm the existence of oscillations within this frequency range.
