Photometric observations in the visual, near infrared, and far infrared (IRAS), and UV(IUE) and IDS spectra are presented of the pre-main-sequence stars HD 97048 and HD 97300. The spectral energy distribution between 0.1 and 100 μm is obtained, and corrected for foreground and circumstellar extinction. Distances are derived and the infrared excess fluxes are interpreted as thermal re-radiation of circumstellar dust. For both stars the integrated infrared excess flux is less than half the flux absorbed in the ultraviolet and visual by circumstellar dust. This discrepancy can be explained in terms of either a flattened circumstellar dust shell, or a significant contribution of the Chamaeleon dust cloud to the total extinction towards the stars.
