Examples of resonances at the second, fourth and fifth harmonic of the electron gyro-frequency observed on Explorer 20 (fixed-frequency topside sounder) records are shown. The resonances are found to possess a very complicated structure and to exhibit a marked variation in amplitude as the angle between the satellite antennae and the Earth's magnetic field lines changesE There appears to be a critical value of this angle at which the character of the gyro-resonance effect alters. Examples are also shown of records which illustrate the phenomena occurring when the X- and the O-echoes are returned from zero virtual depth.
