The authors discuss a model for the magnetotail current in the defined-field approximation. The current transverse to the sheet is due to free particles. They show that phase-space restrictions on particle motion determine the structure of the current sheet. If the particles incident on the sheet have small pitch angles, this leads to an increase in particle density near the neutral sheet, which in turn leads to a paramagnetic current and a decrease in the flux of large-pitchangle particles near the neutral sheet, as well as a diamagnetic current in the vicinity of the neutral sheet.
