Magnetogram series, obtained with the 512-diode-array magnetograph at KPNO, are used to investigate several properties of magnetic flux tubes in the solar atmosphere. Average size, lifetime and inclination of the flux elements are determined. Further discussed is the question how magnetic flux appears and disappears on the solar surface. At last it is investigated if observational results are consistent with Piddington's 'flux-rope-fiber theory' of solar magnetism.
