The methods and results of computing the two-dimensional stress field along the Zakopane-Salgótarján international profile in central Europe are given. The loads arising from terrain topography and crustal density inhomogeneities were considered as the stress sources. Using a floating elastic plate model, the horizontal stress, which has magnitudes of about 70 MPa, is shown to be the most important component.
