A study of stratospheric particles collected at an altitude of 20 km on eight occasions in early 1963 shows that they consist mainly of ammonium sulphate. Within each sulphate particle there appears to be at least one smaller particle, not water-soluble, which presumably acts as a nucleus upon which the ammonium sulphate is deposited in the stratosphere. These latter particles have diameters ranging from 0.01 to 0.7 microns with a mean value of 0.1: their appearance is discussed.
