During ionospheric storms large changes in the ionospheric electron density and the associated total electron content (TEC) have been documented from a wide variety of observations. In many cases these changes are accompanied by large changes in the dynamics of the ionosphere at low, middle and high latitudes. For example, at high latitudes regions of enhanced TEC appear to be aligned with newly configured convection patterns, and at middle latitudes enhanced ion densities are extended in local time, apparently along convection trajectories. However, the role of production, loss and transport in the formation and evolution of these features remains to be established. Here we describe some observed features of storms and discuss the roles that production, loss and transport may play in their appearance.
