An attempt is made to show that a stellar dynamo can produce high X-ray luminosities, as well as modulation periods of more than a thousand seconds. The dynamo model assumes that the interaction of rotation with convection is the basic mechanism for the generation of differential rotation and magnetic activity. The intensity of the magnetic field emerging into the stellar corona is given by the intensity of the mean toroidal field, and X-ray emission is then attributable to magnetic energy dissipation in hot coronal plasma as the magnetic flux tubes are twisted by the photospheric turbulence. Application to the case of a faint main sequence convective star shows that rotational periods in the 10 (to the 32nd) to 10 (to the 36th) erg/sec range are necessary. Several observed stars are suggested as fitting the model, and extensions to compact X-ray sources are indicated.
