This paper gives two examples of the use of multivariate and conditional distributions as a statistical tool for the analysis of proper motion survey data. Examining the analytical relations among the several observed and unobserved variables gives useful insight into methods for gaining bias-free kinematic information from proper motions and for better use of reduced proper motions to determine the luminosity function.
