Numerical calculations are presented for the mean number of scatterings and the mean travel time of a photon in semiinfinite and infinite atmospheres. It is shown that these quantities depend on the scattering mechanism, the initial photon characteristics, and values of lambda and beta (lambda is the probability of photon reradiation during elementary interaction between the photon and atoms of the medium, while beta is the ratio of the continuum absorption coefficient to the absorption coefficient at the line center).
