Various statistical algorithms have been applied to a set of stellar low-dispersion IUE spectra in order to derive objective spectral-classification schemes in the UV. In what the authors call the variable procrustean bed (VPB) approach, the shape of the continuum, together with the most important emission and absorption features are taken into account to define distances in an adequate multivariate space. Principal-component and cluster analysis algorithms are then applied to construct groups of stars which, together with the statistically most significant spectral features, are compared respectively with the existing classification frames and rules.
