The Hakamada-Akasofu-Fry Version 2 (HAFv2) solar wind model was implemented at Air Force Weather Agency on 29 August 2006 after extensive development, validation and verification. AFWA is now using HAFv2 to provide operational real-time forecast products to DOD customers. Other solar wind models, (e.g., 3D-MHD) are being evaluated for implementation in the near future. As the number of operational solar wind models increases and as ensemble forecast systems are developed, the need will increase for standardized model inputs, products and metrics for assessing forecast skill. The international cooperation and collaboration fostered by the IHY (International Heliophysical Year) offers a unique opportunity to develop such standards. This talk will present the case for standardization to improve operational space weather forecasting, a methodology for determining these standards, and a list of recommended standards for consideration.
