Symbiotic Stars: Mass Loss, Symbiotic Stars: Stellar Evolution
Scientific paper
Symbiotic stars are almost certainly double stars with strong interactions between the components. One component is a giant star with a cool surface, while its companion is much more compact. The often very compact star captures mass lost by its companion, and this can lead to a very large number of quite spectacular effects. What is known about the physics and evolution of symbiotic stars is described in this review. It is still often difficult to know which processes play an important role. Possible directions for future work are also indicated.
