Stability of force-free magnetic fields is considered in connection with the problem of magnetic coronal heating. The important role of line tying effect in the MHD stability condition of a linear force-free magnetic field is revealed on the basis of energy principles. The threshold of tearing mode instability in a plane sheared force-free field is analyzed. It is shown that such a field remains stable even under infinitely high values of shear localized at the edge region near a perfectly conducting boundary.
