The evolution of spiral galaxies and other stellar spiral structures as a result of interacting stochastic processes is discussed, reviewing the results of recent investigations based on numerical simulations. The nonequilibrium nature of galaxy-forming processes is pointed out, and the underlying principles and procedures involved in constructing stochastic models are examined in detail. The spatial evolutions of a general model system and of some simulated star systems are shown in extensive diagrams and analyzed.
