The activities of the nucleus are considered, emphasizing dust emission. The findings on the chemical composition of the nucleus based on albedo studies and chemical analyses of the dust are reviewed. The volume and mass of the nucleus are discussed based on images from Vega 1 and 2 and from Giotto.
