THE amount of data available on the magnetic field of the Galaxy has increased considerably since the discovery of linear polarization in the galactic background radio emission1. There now exist three different methods for determining the structure of the field, these being (1) optical observations of interstellar polarization; (2) Faraday rotation measures of extra-galactic radio sources; and (3) the polarization of the galactic radio emission.
