Spectra of several optical transients and variables from the Catalina Sky Survey were obtained at the Palomar 200-inch telescope using the Double Beam Spectrograph, on the nights of UT 2008 May 5, 6, and 7. The transients were all published in real-time on the VOEventNet pages at www.voeventnet.org. The other candidates were chosen based on their variability. Their spectroscopic identifications are as follows: CSS080409:154159+235603 = possible blazar, blue continuum with a possible broad line at ~ 5530A; if this is Mg II 2799, then z ~ 0.98.
