We propose long-slit spectroscopy of star-forming galaxies to investigate the propagation of star formation in a variety of environments. Our sample consists of a range of morphologies including blue compact galaxies, nuclear starbursts and interacting galaxies, allowing us to compare the properties of their star-forming regions. The young stellar populations and interstellar medium will be investigated to determine how their ages, IMF, and physical parameters vary as a function of galaxy environment. Emission lines will be used to determine the physical conditions in the interstellar medium. The spectral energy distribution and line features of the star-forming complexes will be synthesized using model stellar populations including those of Bruzual and Charlot (1993). These observations will address the following issues: 1) How does star formation propagate across a galaxy and what factors contribute or interfere? 2) Do the stellar populations or interstellar medium in the star-forming complexes differ as a function of their environment in the galaxy? 3) Is the number of massive stars in star-forming regions in interacting galaxies enhanced? 4) Are the properties of star-forming regions related to the morphology of the host galaxy?
