The Infrared Space Observatory, ISO, has provided a wealth of data on the well-known dust features, the so-called ``Unidentified'' Infrared (UIR) emission bands between 3 and 13 μm. Both the high spectral and spatial resolution capabilities of the ISO instruments were used to study these features over a wide range of physical conditions in the interstellar medium. In this paper, we show that the width and profile of the bands as well as the variations of the relative band intensities observed in various environments are consistent with the molecular nature of their carriers. The next step is clearly to identify these species combining the ISO data with follow-up observations and dedicated laboratory experiments.
