Details are given of a spectrographic procedure for the analysis of the rare earths and the related elements Sc, Y, Th and U in geochemical samples.D.c. arc excitation in an atmosphere of oxygen-argon and the use of a high dispersion spectrograph gave sufficient sensitivity for the direct determination of Sc, Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Yb and Th in most igneous rocks and all of the lanthanide group except Tb in samples where the total rare earths are about 0.3 %.
