The basic physical characteristics of the Ap (or Kp) index and of the Dst are discussed. A power spectral analysis has been made of the daily and monthly mean values of the Dst field for the period 1957-1970. A sunspot cycle enhancement in the power of the spectral lines is inferred. The magnetosphere is considered as a cylindrical bubble in a complex fluid, subjected to the direct impact of the flow and also to internal inflation by entry of energetic particles. These two factors stimulate two types of oscillations characterized by the spectra of Ap and of Dst.
