It is shown that lunar heat flow may not be determined from earth-based measurements of the moon's radiobrightness. The volume scattering of microwaves by rock clasts within the lunar regolith yields a spectral component in the 5-30-centimeter wavelength range that constitutes an important part of that resulting from lunar heat flow. Unless inaccuracies to the order of 0.015 W/sq m are tolerable, a polychromatic, microwave radiometer in lunar polar orbit may not be used as a heat-flow mapping device.
