Comparisons of power spectra derived from known simulation data and from geomagnetic field data are made using: (1) indirect spectral estimates with the Parzen, Hamming and Papoulis windows: (2) the autoregression technique; and (3) a direct estimate with the Thomson data window (a prolate spheroidal window) and a fast Fourier transform algorithm. We show that only estimate (4) reproduces the simulation spectrum accurately and also appears to give the least-biased estimates for the geomagnetic field data.
