The possibility of near-diffraction-limited resolution for speckle interferometry in the presence of severe defocus is investigated by quantitative measurements of the modulation transfer function (MTF). For roughly 20/pi waves of defocus, possible additional aberrations, and a telescope-atmosphere observing condition characterized by a ratio of diameter to incident wave correlation scale of 19.2, the MTF is monotonic and is depressed by a factor of less than 20 from that of the unaberrated system.
