Attention is given to a method for noise reduction in double-exposure speckle interferometry that is based on averaging independent spatially filtered correlation fringe patterns. The method is of particular interest for measuring dynamic displacement fields for which recent developments in electronic speckle pattern interferometry such as phase stepping and speckle averaging are inappropriate. The technique is illustrated with measurements of in-plane displacements that are due to impact loading of a stationary crack. The case of two speckle patterns recorded on the same piece of film, in which one pattern is shifted by a few speckle diameters relative to the other, is considered.
