A modification is presented to the linear characteristic method used to finite difference the discrete ordinate (S-N) equations. This modification is designed to produce the correct diffusion limit in the radiative transfer context in the limit of optically thick mesh cells. Numerical tests suggest that this finite difference method is a practical calculational scheme for radiative transfer problems.
