The paper outlines main features of the Spacelab utilization program and surveys experiment proposals and the preliminary results of a mission analysis. The paper also examines the main scientific and technical characteristics of the payloads considered for the four Spacelab missions - two demonstration missions planned by the ESA and two West German missions open to other Europeans. Characteristics of the three fundamental types of Spacelab missions (microgravity, earth-oriented, and deep-space-oriented) are described.
