Three charged particle analyzers built at the Applied Physics Laboratory and intended for spaceborne plasma studies are described. Additionally, generic design features of particle detectors are reviewed. The Project Ulysses (formerly the Solar Polar Mission) will carry the Heliosphere Instrument for Spectra, Composition and Anisotropy at Low Energies (HI-SCALE). Its three detectors will cover the 0.05-5 MeV energy range using Si detectors. The Galileo Probe will feature the Energetic Particle Detector (EPD) for characterizing the interplanetary and Jovian magnetospheric particle distributions, also by means of Si detectors. Finally, Medium Energy Particle Analyzers (MEPA) are carried on the Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorer. MEPA measures low energy ion fluxes following the injection of tracer ions into and out of the magnetosphere, thus gathering data on the composition of the magnetosphere.
