The space experiments of Marangoni convection and thermocapillary convection in the square tanks were performed on board the Chinese small scientific satellite of SJ-5, which was developed by the Chinese Academy of Space Technology (CAST) and launched in the May of 1999. The immiscible liquids of FC-71 and paraffin are selected as the experimental medium, and the solid paraffin was melted in the orbit to overcome the difficulty of the vibration during the launch process and the mixture during the construction of the immiscible liquid layers. The tele-science method was used to operate the space experiments from the ground-based laboratory, and the thousands picture on the convection field was measured in the real time. The successful results of SJ-5 mission are helpful for the future microgravity experiments of fluid physics by using the unrecoverable and small scientific satellite.
