An attempt to observe PMSE (Polar Mesospheric Summer Echoes) at high southern latitudes is reported. VHF (50 MHz) radar observations were carried out from King George Island, Antarctica, in 3-hr sessions for some twenty days between mid-January and mid-February 1993. In addition, two longer runs (14 and 21 hours) were made during the observation period. Although an exhaustive analysis of the data has yet to be completed, the clear absence of PMSE returns appears to be typical of the entire 30-day period of observations.
