We have measured the 187 Os / 186 Os and Os concentrations of ferromanganese crusts forming on serpentinized peridotites from the Atlantic Ocean and also report major element data for these samples and six manganese nodules previously analyzed for Os. Variations in the 187 Os / 186 Os ratios of manganese nodules are the result of two processes operating on different spatial scales. The large scale variations result from the impression of intense local Os inputs from continental and oceanic sources on a generally homogeneous oceanic 187 Os / 186 Os ratio. Fine scale variations may be understood as the result of the mixing of a constant fine-grained debris flux of meteoritic Os imposed on varying amounts of Os precipitated from seawater.
