A suite of diabase dikes from northwest Greenland showed dual magnetic behaviour in that, while the bulk magnetic properties of the samples indicated soft magnetization, the same samples were also found to carry stable remanence. Such a dual behaviour is attributed to magnetic grains of different size spectra coexisting in the rock sample. It was shown by various experiments on separated magnetic fractions that the bulk magnetic properties are due to grains of magnetite observable under a microscope, while the remanent magnetism resides in grains of magnetite occurring as discrete particles within the silicates. A model is proposed for their coexistence in the rock sample in order to explain some of the experimental results.
