Changes in the value of several ionospheric parameters such as H(+)(H2O)n/(NO(+)+O2(+)), electron density, the lumped electron loss coefficient, and the ratio of negative ions to electrons were recorded during polar cap absorption (PCA). The enhanced electron-ion production rate observed during PCA caused by particle precipitation is not adequate to explain these changes. A decrease in the values of the lumped electron loss coefficient and the first-mentioned ratio observed at about 80 km can be explained only by lowering the quiet-time profile of the lumped conversion rate constant B by 10 km.
