This paper presents the results of a correlation analysis between data on energetic particle pulses obtained by the IMP-J spacecraft (P4: E = 160-230 keV) and the auroral electrojet index AE. The magnetotail is divided into three regions: neutral-sheet region, low-latitude region, and high-latitude region. In the neutral-sheet region, the average energetic particle flux is the highest among all three regions. In the high-latitude region the flux is the lowest. This indicates that the source of energetic particle pulses may be located in the neutral-sheet region. The correlation between energetic particle pulses and AE index is most significant in the neutral-sheet region, the (correlation coefficient R = 0.59). In the low and high-latitude regions, R decreases sharply, implying that energetic-particle-pulse event is a substorm-relevant event, so that the particles are accelerated by the electric field induced by magnetic-field-line reconnection near the neutral-sheet region. The accelerated area is limited to a thin layer around neutral sheet, as found by Hones (1979).
