The dynamics of protons in a geomagnetic field are surveyed with attention to basic nonadiabatic processes which affect one or more adiabatic invariants. Energy and pitch-angle distributions are examined, and the need for data on low-frequency oscillations and for simultaneous measurements of studied processes is considered. The energies of precipitating protons and of captured or quasi-captured protons are described for some circumstances.
