Results of preliminary analysis of the first nephelometric measurements carried out in the atmsophere of Venus by means of the Venera 9 and 10 space probes are described. Measurements were made at 0.92-micron wavelength in the height range from 62 to 18 km. The principal cloud layer of Venus extends down to 49 km above the surface. The clouds are rather transparent with meteorological visibility of 1 to 3 km. The main microstructural features are a mean particle size of 1 to 3 microns and a particle concentration of 100 to 500 per cu cm. Measurements for the lower atmosphere are discussed in terms of a possible aerosol model.
