Attention is given to system elements that can be used in the design of large telescopes with shape-variable mirrors in order to obtain superior image quality with the smallest number of mirrors and the simplest image correctors. On the basis of the concepts first proposed by Rosin et al. (1972), small correctors are used in place of large ones in such applications as multiobject spectroscopy, where a continuous field is unnecessary. Segmented field correctors and focal reducers, and conical fiber-optics reducers, are employed. An improved secondary mirror wobbling mode is introduced for the conduct of IR observations. A 7.5-m aperture telescope incorporating these features is presented.
