An extensive series of ionospheric absorption measurements carried out at Aberystwyth near noon on a large number of days in the period March 1961-September 1962 has been analysed. Measurements were made on a series of frequencies extending from 1.9 Mc/s upwards and particular attention has been given to the absorption at frequencies near the E-region critical frequencyE It was found that the experimental data could only be reconciled with theory if the collisional frequency at E-layer heights varied from day to day and these day to day variations in v appeared to depend upon solar activity. These results suggest that the electron temperature at 110 km is significantly larger than the neutral gas temperature but further work is required before a definite conclusion is reached. Some measurements made when sporadic-E ionisation was present suggest that absorption measurements can be used to locate accurately the height of the Es ionisation.
