The paper describes some measurements of the variation of refractive index and temperature in elevated inversion layers in the troposphere, using microwave rcfractometers and thermometers installed in aircraft. Changes of 20-25 N-units (N = (n - 1).106) and 4°C wore measured in a vertical distance of a few metres or less across an inversion layer extending for several tens of kilometres in the horizontal direction. Large gradients of refractive index were also occasionally observed in clear air between the inversion layer and the ground, and they are believed to be the cause of some of the transitory echoes ("angels") observed on centimetric radar at vertical and oblique incidence.
