An analysis of 48 atmospherics waveforms has been made to yield the distances of origin and the frequency-amplitude spectra. By using the formula for the resultant field strength of the dominant mode in the Earth-ionosphere wave-guide, attenuation coefficients for the frequency range of 3-15 kHz have been determined and compared with the results of earlier workers and with theory. Having determined the attenuation coefficients, the average source-spectrum is calculated back and is discussed in relation to the excitation factor.
