A solution of the Ernst equation in an axially symmetric gravitational field caused by a rotating source is given in a compact form using the prolate spheroidal coordinates for an arbitrary real value of the deformation parameter δ. The proof of the validity of the solution is given analytically for integer δ, and to lowest orders in λ (= q2/p2) for real δ. Numerical results confirming the validity of this solution are thoroughly given to higher orders in λ for real δ.
