A comprehensive review of soliton effects in optical waveguides is presented. Various forms of optical solitons are introduced for various types of waveguides that include single mode fibre, multimode fibre, fibres with polarization dispersion and microstructure fibres. In addition, solitons in fibres having variations in the axial directions, such as those with loss compensated by periodic amplifications, with periodic variations of group velocity dispersion and those with gratings, are also presented.
