A mechanism for the generation of magnetic holes in the solar wind that is unrelated to the mirror mode instability is proposed. This invokes MHD solitons of mixed slow-mode/intermediate mode type, which propagate with small velocity at large angle to the magnetic field. From certain initial conditions in the solar wind plasma, such structures can evolve as a stable flow feature without the need for temperature anisotropy.
