Solar-wind exposure effects revealed by the study of lunar samples returned to earth by the Apollo program are reviewed. For comparison, a review of data concerning the flux, energy, and composition of the solar wind as acquired by direct measurement during space missions, including Apollo, is given. The collection of implanted ions, the damage caused during particle deceleration and sputtering due to the transfer of energy from the incident to target atoms are considered. Some difficulties associated with deriving elemental and isotopic compositions of the contemporary and ancient particle flux are outlined. Finally, attention is given to the implications of fractionation during sputtering.
