January saw a slight rise in the sunspot MDF after the decline seen during the past three months. It was noticed that the northern hemisphere MDF was much lower than the southern hemisphere, which saw a marked rise during this month. However, once again no naked eye sunspot groups were reported and there were few really complex groups. There was a marked decline in the sunspot MDF in February bringing it down to a level previously seen in early 1999. Activity on the southern hemisphere, at a high level last month, fell sharply but it was slightly more active than the northern hemisphere.
