In 2003 February, David Pettitt and the magnetometry team detected stormy conditions on February 1 and 2 and very disturbed conditions on Feb 9, with some observers noting disturbances on Feb 15, 18, 27 and 28. Owing to the variations in the types of instrument used, the methods and the time ranges in which the observations are made, not to mention patterns of local magnetic interference, consensus is not always achieved between members as to the actual pattern of magnetic activity. However, consensus that a magnetic storm is in progress is usually achieved particularly when the planetary magnetic index Kp exceeds 5 in value in any 3-hour period in the 24-hour day, as reported by the GeoForschungsZentrum at Niemegk in Germany.
